Above the Ashes is a memoir about a Wildland Firefighter struggling with depression and panic attacks to the point where it almost takes his life. Wanting to get his life back on track, Kevin Conley challenges himself to take a leap of faith and tackle his demons head on. He decides to bike across the states, with his dog and wingman, Rocky, in hopes of raising money for the Wildland Firefighter Foundation while also bringing awareness to the importance of mental health.

Reminiscent of Cheryl Strayed’s ‘Wild,’ Conley takes his life back using a less than conventional method. He discusses the highs and lows he encounters along the way as he battles grief and anger. I absolutely loved the raw, vulnerable writing. He shatters stigmas surrounding discussing mental illness, particularly among the firefighting community. His writing is relatable and will help others feel seen.

Some of my favorite parts of Above the Ashes were the kind actions of others along his journey, that are sure to restore your faith in humanity. Whether it was buying him a meal or watching Rocky for a couple of days, the generosity of man shines through in Conley’s writing. In a world that constantly highlights the bad on the news and in the media, it is so refreshing to be reminded that there are people that care.

I greatly admire Conley’s ‘no risk no reward’ approach towards anxiety and depression. I’ve found myself wildly inspired, wanting to take more chances and stop letting my mental illness hold the reins.

My dad is an ex fire chief, still active today, and having been immersed in the community my entire life, I can attest to the need for a more open line of communication when it comes to mental illness. They are told to “be tough” and this translates to withholding their struggles. There is a real need for stories like this to be shared.

In his reflections on his voyage pedaling for peace and understanding, Conley’s story serves as a bright beacon for dark, trying times. Above The Ashes is a heartwarming testament to human fortitude, resilience, & camaraderie.
