Yinka, Where is your Huzband?- Lizzie Blackburn
Thirty-something year old Yinka is a successful British-Nigerian woman who is slightly shattered after her long-term relationship comes to an end. This might not have been so cataclysmic if it weren’t for her very traditional Christian mother and aunties constantly breathing down her neck about not having a husband. Further, her cousin is getting married and Yinka refuses to show up with no plus one. Ergo, Operation: Find a Wedding Date is in action.
With the perfectly laid out plan, this should be simple enough but Yinka finds more than a couple of wrenches thrown into said plan. Is she destined to be forever single? Will her mother ever accept her as she is? And more importantly, will Yinka ever fully embrace who she is?
Yinka, Where is Your Huzband is a breath of fresh air when it comes to the rom-com genre. First off, the protagonist is a POC in her thirties- HALLELUJAH! This isn’t a traditional boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, some repetitive scenario keeps couple apart but ultimately ends in a “happily ever after” book, much to my relief. Yes, this is a story of a woman on the path to love…SELF LOVE.
Yinka is wonderfully relatable, a bit dorky, and witty. She can be socially awkward and get caught up in her own head. She is so real and I’m here for it. Yinka, Where is Your Huzband? gets my thirty-something year old, unmarried, POC stamp of approval. This is the perfect book for any of woman who hasn’t felt beautiful enough in her own skin and has screamed to the heavens “Why aren’t I good enough?!!” This is a stellar debut and I recommend it without any reservations.
