The Nature of Witches- Rachel Griffin
Oh. My. Sun.
I’m going to need a sequel ASAP.
Clara Densmore is the chosen one. She is an Ever witch, meaning she can harness the magic of each season in a way no other witch can. But heavy is the head that wears the crown and she feels crushed under the weight of the high expectations placed upon her. More excruciatingly her Magic seems to seek out those she loves most, destroying them.
Clara begrudgingly works on strengthening her unique magic at the Eastern School of Solar Magic. Eastern is not unlike Hogwarts but the four houses are broken into seasons; each season yielding their own strengths and weaknesses. It has been the responsibility of witches to maintain the climate in a world that is crushing under the weight the shaders (muggles, non magic persons) place on it. With an atmosphere that has become so erratic and unpredictable, witches and shaders alike turn to Clara. But will it be too much for one witch to control? And after the devastating loss of her loved ones, does she even want to yield this power anymore?
With an ending that will make you cheer,
Griffin reminds us that there is great magic to be had when you stop fighting you are.
The Nature of Witches is so impossibly endearing.
Griffin has created a world that makes so much sense- as if this sort of magic actually does exist and always has.
I appreciate how the enemy in this book is actually painfully relevant to the real world. In a world of such fire climate change we are our own worst enemy and there truly is a battle to be fought. This beautiful YA novel is a great way to further increase our awareness.
