This book was every bit as delectable as the sumptuous meals concocted throughout the story.

Within the backdrop of WWII Britain, four women have entered a cooking competition in the hopes of winning and landing themselves a job hosting a cooking radio show. Based on an actual BBC program, The Kitchen Front was meant to help housewives with wartime rationing stretching out ingredients available and getting inventive with their recipes. The woman have entered with their own individual motives, each pivotal to making a better future for themselves.

Audrey, a woman widowed by the war and struggling to provide for her four boys, is at the end of her rope and needs this position to support her family. Her sister, Lady Gwendolyn, is looking for worth outside of her toxic marriage. Her shy kitchen maid, Nell, is looking for a future that goes beyond a life of servitude. And lastly, Zelda, a trained chef, it’s a chance to regain a title similar to what she had before the war had bombed her restaurant. Zelda’s additional struggle to keep a secret under wraps that had the possibility to rob her of this chance.

Who will take home that title of The Kitchen Front co-host and what will become of the three who don’t win?

I loved this book. The Kitchen Front had such wonderful character arcs. These four women each start out as strong and resilient, in their own right, but find that one of the bravest things one can do is open up their heart and allow themselves to be supported and cared for. This vulnerability and the power of friendship through hardships was utterly endearing.

This is yet another WWII novel that will leave you cheering for the fortitude of those affected by the most devastating of times and finding resilience within themselves that they may not have been aware of prior.
